Understanding Group Race Class
Class in horse racing is not simply about which race a horse has competed in. It is about how a horse performs relative to the level it is asked to compete at.
Defining Class
A horse that finishes fourth in a Group 1 may be showing more class than a horse that wins a Group 3 — depending on the quality of the field, the margins involved, and the circumstances of the race.
How We Assess Class
Our class assessment considers:
- Official Ratings — but context matters more than the raw number
- Form against proven Group performers — beating or running close to established top-class horses
- Progression curve — is the horse still improving or has it plateaued?
- Consistency at level — repeated competitive efforts indicate genuine class
Class and Value
The market often prices horses based on their most recent run. But class is deeper than one performance. A Group 1 horse dropping into a Group 3 with a legitimate excuse for a poor last run can offer tremendous value.
This is where our analysis finds its edge.
